Mirco Patarini Elected to IMC Board

Mirco Patarini, President of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA), was elected to the IMC Executive Committee for a two-year term at the 41st General Assembly of the International Music Council. This marks the first time that the CIA, an IMC member since 1975, has been directly represented on the Executive Board.

The IMC is a UNESCO partner NGO and represents the largest global network of music organisations and institutions dedicated to promoting essential musical rights for all. An important IMC platform is the IMC 5 Music Rights for Musicians Around the World, which the CIA supports and has officially adopted.

History

In 1947, American musicologist Charles Seeger called on countries around the world to create an International Institute of Music. Its mission would be to ensure coordination between the various sectors of international activity in the field of music and, above all, to work for peace and the unity of peoples through it.

With the support of US diplomacy, Brazilian musicologist and diplomat Luis Heitor Correa de Azevedo forwarded the idea to UNESCO, which led to a motion adopted by the General Conference in favour of the creation of such a musical organisation.

In 1948, Jaime Torres Bodet, Director-General of UNESCO, brought together four experts, selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization itself, along with representatives of the four major musical organisations of the time: the International Society of Contemporary Music, the International Society of Musicology, the International Federation of Musical Youth, and the International Council of Popular Music. At a meeting held in Paris on 28 January of the same year, this group of experts adopted the Statutes of the International Music Council.

Over the years, the IMC has grown into a highly influential network that promotes appropriate policies and practices aimed at strengthening the work of its members and partners worldwide. It also proclaimed the Five Musical Rights, which today represent the organisation’s core values.

The IMC network is present in 150 countries across all continents, with national music councils and international, regional, and national music organisations, as well as specialised organisations in the arts and culture. Through its members, the IMC has direct access to over 1,000 organisations and 600 million people eager to develop and share knowledge and experiences on various aspects of musical life.

Regional groups in Africa and Europe enable the development of regional programmes and activities specifically tailored to the needs of IMC members and partners in the region in question.
